The Quiet Practice of Awareness

Before we ever knew God, He was the One who reached first. He initiated the encounter. He sent people—sometimes strangers, sometimes friends—to share the Gospel of Christ with us. Others He assigned to simply demonstrate kindness, patience, and love.

That’s how I came to know God during my college years—not through grand miracles, but through ordinary people who carried His presence in quiet ways.

Fast forward many years later. As believers and followers of Christ, we may notice something shifting. Our initial hunger and spiritual passion can fade over time. The closeness we once felt becomes distant. And so we ask: Would God reach out again like before?

Looking at Scripture, I began to see something deeper. God still reaches—but in a different way. He now sends prophets, pastors, mentors, and spiritual friends to remind us of His voice. He also speaks through His Spirit within us, stirring awareness and drawing us back.

In both the “before” and “after” seasons of faith, the same principle lies at the heart of our journey—awareness. Awareness keeps us attuned to God’s presence, whether through people, moments, or silence. It is the foundation of every rediscovery.

In the art of rediscovering God, the practice of awareness begins with stillness. It’s not the absence of activity, but the quieting of the soul long enough to notice His presence. Awareness doesn’t always come through thunder or revelation—it often begins in ordinary moments.

It’s in the gentle conviction that rises during prayer.

It’s in the quiet assurance that meets us when we open the Word.

It’s in the unexplainable peace that interrupts our worries.

To be aware of God is to remember that He is not distant. He is present in every breath, every task, every encounter. The challenge is not finding Him, but noticing Him again.

Awareness also means learning to listen—to what God may be saying through people, circumstances, and even silence. When we slow down long enough to listen, our hearts begin to recognize the familiar rhythm of His voice.

And as our awareness grows, something begins to awaken within us: a renewed hunger, a deeper longing, a quiet joy. We realize that rediscovering God is not about chasing new experiences but about returning to the simplicity of knowing Him again—as we did at first.
